Each year during Fire Prevention week the Fire Department hosts an open house. The purpose of this event was to spread the fire safety message by encouraging everyone to come out.

Helping people understand how to keep people safe especially in a time of disaster is very crucial. Fire paramedic and public education officer Brain Ezell took initiative in helping put on this event.

Ezell vocalized, “To give them a little insight of what we do and what our job entails. We’re also trying to get across a safety message to the families and the children in our community as well.

The all-day event included live demonstrations of rescue, firefighting equipment, disassembling auto parts, and kid’s challenge obstacles. Lowe's, Kohl’s, and Cardinal Glennon were all participants. Coordinator for Cardinal Glennon, Kimberly Fanter was able to teach the kids about road safety.

Fanter expresses, “Before they do that and get on the pedal carts they have to get fixed for a helmet and we are fitting each and every child today for a helmet.”

The money Cardinal Glennon receives is given back to the community by providing a town that children learn about stop signs, railroad crossings, and how to properly pay attention to traffic signals.

Fire Fighters demonstrate how to disassemble a car in an emergency.

Fire fighters educated the participants that day what to do if there was ever a fire in their home. A mom and two girls exclaimed, “Mostly for grown up to do but children to get out as fast as possible to a safety spot maybe by your mailbox at your home.”

Everyone was encouraged to participate and take advantage of the opportunity to take a tour with the fire house, visit with the members and ask any questions.
