Yik Yak application

Lindenwood University students have taken a liking to a new app over the past year. The app, called Yik Yak, allows people to communicate anonymously within a five mile radius of each other.

A student from a university in Florida was arrested in early September after making a post on Yik Yak indicating that the university may be under threat of a gun attack. The threat was posted by 18-year-old student, Emeil Stewart, on the campus of Florida Atlantic University. Stewart was expelled from the school following his arrest.

Lindenwood University’s head of security, John Bowman, is aware that these threats could be made on any college campus. Bowman states that the Community Relations section of Lindenwood Security monitors Yik Yak and many other social media outlets.

“Any type of threat is going to be investigated,” states Bowman. “Whether it’s towards the university or our students, we’re going to investigate those.”
