Dougie Jones’ 10 Best ‘Twin Peaks’ Scenes

All Summer I’ve been captivated by Twin Peaks: The Return, David Lynch’s experimental — often exasperating — but ever brilliant revival miniseries. A fan of Lynch but not the original Peaks, I approached The Return with a completely open-mind and have been rewarded tenfold, with surrealism prioritised over fan service and presenting the original series’ protagonist, Kyle Maclachlan’s Dale Cooper, trapped in the form of a disengaged, childlike insurance worker called Dougie.

I soon fell in love with Dougie, a sort-of Mr. Bean for our times, who stumbles between scenario, ever blessed with good luck and constantly rescued by adoring wife Janey-E (Naomi Watts) and son Sonny Jim (Pierce Gagnon). Maclachlan is playing two roles on The Return- he also appears as psycho killer Dirty Cooper — but his performance as Dougie is one of exceptional empathy, and one of the finest on film or TV this year.

To celebrate Dougie’s time on the show, which *may* have come to an end this week, I’ve collected some of my favourite scenes featuring the character from the past 15 episodes and now present them to you, complete with GIF and video evidence of their brilliance!

1.Lynch’s homage to another iconic director David; Episode 11’s climactic confrontation sees Dougie delivering a suspicious package. “What’s in the BOX?” A delicious cherry pie, that’s what!

2.After defending himself and Janey-E from the murderous Ike The Spike (and receiving a message from The Arm), Dougie becomes something of a local hero.

3.It was at this moment I knew I was in on Twin Peaks: The Return. Dougie’s incredibly good luck began in a Vegas casino, where his winning streak — triggered by the “Hellooo-o-o-o!” mating call — led to him being called ‘Mr. Jackpots’ by a fortunate old woman.

That old woman returns in Part 11 to thank Mr. Jackpots, while he’s being treated to some pie. One of the most heartwarming moments in modern TV history.

4.Perhaps my single favourite shot of the entire series has been Sonny Jim playing in his new gym, given to the Joneses as a gift after Dougie’s helpful behaviour. It’s pure Lynchian magic.

5.Reunited with his beloved cherry pie, Dougie/Dale gives a look to provoke a thousand “Find someone who looks at you the way….” Instagram captions.

6.Upon arriving home for the first time, Dougie entertains Sonny Jim during breakfast by wearing his tie over his head.

7.This was Maclachlan’s only appearance in Part 12: a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene of Dougie throwing a ball (poorly) with Sonny Jim.

8.In a scene of extraordinary loneliness, Dougie befriends a statue of a cowboy, accompanied by the heartbreaking “Windswept” theme.

9Janey-E has largely been too one-dimensional a figure to be sympathetic, but there’s something inherently sad about her attempts to seduce her husband and the complete blankness of his expression both before and during sex. Janey-E deserves to get the real Dougie back.

10.Watching someone eat chocolate cake on film can either be really disgusting (Matilda) or really delightful. Dougie’s is firmly in the latter camp, an uninterrupted 2-minute take of Maclachlan enjoying a slice prepared by Janey-E.

Is this the death of Dougie Jones? Will he return as Dale Cooper after sticking the fork in the socket and initiating a major cosmic reaction?

Twin Peaks: The Return continues Sundays on Showtime/Sky Atlantic.
