‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Trailer: The Most Magical Moments
So Mary Poppins Returns dropped its full trailer today, and while the Rob Marshall-directed sequel still looks a little shaky, there are enough throwbacks to… umm… the Defining Film of My Childhood to send me sobbing in my university’s Mac lab.
Firstly, Cherry Tree Lane looks phenomenal. Just perfect. But reconstructing a set is easier than recreating a mood.
Cynic that I am, I simply must criticise this moment featuring Ben Whishaw crying about his dead wife. Maybe it works in the film, but in the first 30 seconds of a trailer it seems extremely hammy.
Mary Poppins, a mysterious witch who appears from the sky and spends all her time giving out to children, is low-key really sinister.
Ayyyyy 2D animation! Fantastic. I wasn’t expecting it to look this much like the original. Even if the underwater stuff is totally stolen from Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
This sequence looks far too imaginative to be in a Rob Marshall film.
The absolute queen herself, Angela Lansbury, back in business as a kinda sorta version of Eglantine Price from Bedknobs (I hope). Her character is called ‘Balloon Lady’, but wouldn’t it be amazing if she subtly muttered some Substitutiary Locomotion under her breath.
Hard to overstate how happy this makes me.
Everybody’s favourite Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again stars adding some Oscary prestige to proceedings. Neither are really needed, but it’ll surely be fun to have them involved. Especially Firth, probably the closest thing we have to a David Tomlinson type nowadays.
Needless to say this is the most wonderful thing I’ve ever witnessed in my entire life. DICK VAN DYKE, MOTHERFUCKERS.
We all need more dancing chimney sweeps in our life.
So yeah, Poppins Returns is definitely delivering on what it’s promised. And unlike Incredibles 2, I have zero expectations this will be on a par with its predecessor, given the lack of Sherman Brothers or Robert Stevenson involvement. But sure it’ll be grand. And I love Dick van Dyke so very much.
