Today we’re kicking off our Review Of The Year coverage that’ll run through the remainder of the year and conclude with our Best Films of 2018. But what of the marketing that sold these films? Before we reveal our Best Posters, let’s have a browse of the trailers we rewatched and got psyched over the most.

We’ve included trailers for films released during 2018, including some that came out last year.

  1. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE — FALLOUT | TRAILER 1

The only thing better than this trailer is the movie itself. We never thought an Imagine Dragons needle drop would be the best marketing moment of the year, but “Friction” absolutely kills as we’re given our first look at the best action movie of the decade during the Super Bowl

2. A STAR IS BORN | TRAILER 1

A more populist choice for Trailer of the Year, A Star is Born’s first look introduces us to its crazy melodramatic world, producing several memes and a smash-hit song (“Shallow”) in the process.

3. THE OLD MAN & THE GUN | TRAILER

The gentle trailer for this David Lowery picture has a really heartwarming 70s vibe, peaking with the final title hard and freeze-frame.

4. MARY POPPINS RETURNS | TRAILER 2

Dick! Van! Dyke! Is! Back! Anyone could’ve cut together a Mary Poppins Returns trailer with that reveal, and it would make a Best of the Year list.

5. VICE | TRAILER 1

Adam McKay movies are supremely trailer-friendly, with brash colourful imagery and a few gems of big-hitter dialogue. Vice’s decision to use a recent, not particularly good Killers song was interesting… and weirdly successful.

6. FIRST MAN | TRAILER 1

Dunkirk meets The Tree of Life, sold the first trailer for Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic. The film itself turned out to the absolute worst version of both of those things.

7. BLACK PANTHER | TEASER TRAILER

Ignore the fact this trailer dropped in summer of 2017: a Run The Jewels song is always a good idea, and this was by far the most appealing distillation of what was ultimately quite a generic comic-book film.

9. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY | SUPER BOWL TEASER

It took a long, long time to get a Solo trailer of any kind, and the first was — we tend to forget after seeing the painful finished product — pretty good.
