American Democracy in Action

Capitol police getting ready to arrest protesters.

Nothing better illustrates the state of American democracy today than armed policemen dragging defenseless citizens — often, but not always, women, seriously sick or physically-challenged people in wheelchairs — whose every-day struggle to survive gave them courage to stand up and speak up against the government.

It was even worse to watch the Senate Budget Committee vote after the public protest against the proposed GOP Tax Cut Bill. As the shouts and screams of protestors echoed through the halls of the Senate Building, all GOP Senators on the Committee voted in favor and all Democratic Senators on the Committee voted against the bill. With a one-vote majority in favor, the Republicans got their wish and now the entire US Senate is to vote on the controversial bill without any public hearings or debate on the proposal. If it passes, the proposed tax cuts may become the single largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in American history, or perhaps in the history of any democracy.
