Mallorca, the jewel of the Balearic islands, has plenty to offer in terms of range of holiday villas, wonderful beaches, colorful nightlife and good shopping outlets.

Sometimes you don’t have enough time to discover them all though, and that means that your bucket list is going to be fairly limited.

What should you definitely put on this bucket list? Which places are simply not to be missed?

From our own experience, and from talking to our long-time Mallorca guests, there are by all accounts a few of these places.

1. Le Seu

Chances are you are going to make way toward Mallorca’s capital, Palma, and when you do, you will recognize why this cathedral is first on our list.

The stunning cathedral of Santa Maria is better known simply as Le Seu, and it stands proud in the central area of Palma, showcasing its beauty and history.

Equally awe-inspiring from the outside as it is inside, Le Seu will probably be the first thing you notice as you approach the city.

Take some time and explore its 61 stained-glass windows as well as a connecting museum, artefacts and chapels — you don’t have to be religious to appreciate it.

2. Serra de Tramuntana

If it is the great outdoors you start craving while in Mallorca, the mountain range Serra de Tramuntana is really a prime example and should not be missed even by those less inclined to hiking.

Located along and across the island northwest coast, it’s particularly well suited if you are based in Pollensa or Puerto Pollensa.

Prepare to experience the true natural eye candy in its purest form as you traverse this landscape, whether on two feet or four wheels.

With a little luck you might even catch a glimpse of the mountain goats wandering about so make sure you have plenty of space for those photos on your phone or camera.

3. Valldemosa

Since you’re already in the area of Tramuntana, why not make towards the village of Valldemosa, nicely situated at 436 meters above sea level (can you say “mmmm fresh mountain air”?).

The village is not only remarkable for its position but has plenty of history as well: Federic Chopin and his lover George Sand lived there from December 1838 to February 1839, while it’s also the birthplace of Saint Catalina Thomàs.

If you do make it here, you simply must try out the local specialty: the cocas of Valldemosa. Cocas are sweet pastry buns with various additions such as nuts and candied fruit characteristic for Mallorca as well as Catalunya.

4. Alcudia

Also situated in the north of the island, Alcudia is not just resorts and beaches — it’s also home to a veritable wellspring of 13th century landmarks.

Make sure not to miss the wall that surrounds the whole town, which in turn is lined with picturesque little alleys and shops.

On Tuesday and Sundays, don’t miss the street market that pops up, although this isn’t really a must and should be really avoided if you’re not into big crowds of tourists.

5. Castell de Belver

With our last item on the list, we return back to Palma area. This circular castle is located some 3 km northwest from the capital and has plenty to offer for history buffs and the casual visitors alike.

You can pretty much visit it any time of the year (although the opening hours are slightly shorter in winter) and it’s equally fun for a solo visit or together with your kids who will enjoy playing kings and queens as they climb the top of the castle.

The castle is a Gothic masterpiece and was erected for the famed King Jaume II of Mallorca “just” 7 centuries ago.
