Roll over July and August.

September is definitely not on the top of your mind as the best time to go on any kind of holiday, let alone a villa holiday — if you’re like most people.

Indeed, it’s July and August that typically get all the attention as the holiday months as they best represent summer in our collective psyche.

But there are so many reasons you may not want to follow the flock and do the less typical thing.

Many of them will make you go a-ha! and feel good about yourself once your plan is carried out and you realise you made a great decision.

What are these reasons? Where do we start.

1) BETTER AVAILABILITY OF VILLAS

Villas are usually booked completely in July and August for months in advance. September leaves a lot more choice of availability for villas you might have to miss out on otherwise.

Certain properties get crazy popular in the height of the summer season but have plenty of dates left in September (especially towards the end of the month). This is a perfect reason to try out some beautiful villas that are out of your reach earlier in the year.

2) BETTER PRICES OF VILLAS

Not only is the availability of villas in principle better in September, the prices are also a lot more wallet-friendly during the last month of summer.

Instead of breaking your bank, or forcing you to choose a hotel stay or an apartment rental from a stranger via Airbnb (honest advice: avoid both), booking a villa in September allows you to eat your cake and have it too.

3) PERFECT TEMPERATURES

Most people find the generally milder — but still very warm — temperatures in September much more agreeable than the scorching heat of July and August. Chances are, you will too.

Just imagine, instead of maximum two to three hours in the sun at the apex of summer, you can spend a much longer time catching tan in September without worrying about sunburns (or worse).

4) QUIETER BEACHES AND POINTS OF INTEREST

Since most people herd the resorts and beaches in July and August, these tend to be of optimal occupancy during September (and even October). Not quite brimming with people but also not too empty and desolate.

Same goes for all the sights — museums, rides, vantage points — that typically get seriously queued up during the height of summer. You will have a much easier time if you go visit them in September.

5) NO KIDS

Nobody is saying you are a bad parent who doesn’t love their children but let’s face it — some me-time away from the kids and the loud teenagers can be a good thing.

In September, most children are already deep in school activities meaning you can plan a totally selfish holiday for yourself or yourself and your partner, without the guilt of leaving the young ones behind (just secure a good babysitter or help from another family member beforehand).

Oh yeah, and let’s not forget, less other people’s children too!

6) RICH CHOICE OF ACTIVITIES

September doesn’t mean that activities in the holiday destinations come to a screeching halt. Quite the contrary, some of the best events in Spain and Portugal happen around this time of the year.

Consider, for instance, the wealth of parties that are still happening in Marbella during the month, Cirque de Soleil in Mallorca we wrote about awhile back or food festivals in Algarve — there’s something for everyone!

7) WEATHER AT HOME GETTING UGLY

Speaking of weather, unless you already live in Portugal or Spain or south of Europe, by September the weather starts getting increasingly grimmer every day in September.

While other will have to deal with drizzles, impending cold and shorter days without much sunlight, you can escape it all and enjoy the sunsets from the terrace of your villa in Vale do Lobo or Puerto Banus.

8) BRAGGING RIGHTS

What we just mentioned has another advantage: while general populace is getting depressed by the scarcity of sun rays, you can stick their nose into it by taking a selfie in front of your swimming pool in Algarve and posting it on Instagram and Facebook.

Nothing will give you that injection of feeling better about yourself more easily than bragging a little to your friends and family about the hard life sipping wine in your villa garden or waking up in the grand master bedroom after a restful night’s sleep.

9) EASIER TO TIDE YOU OVER TILL CHRISTMAS

Finally, what better way to create the illusion of a short and quick winter than taking your villa holiday as close to Christmas as possible. By the time you return, the weeks will fly by and Christmas will already be there.

And then it’s just a matter of pulling it through those few coldest weeks before the warm season begins again. You won’t even feel the cold months!
