The vanishing of the gifted
a story about the hidden empires
There’s another storyline that has entered my mind lately. A storyline I prefer to create for the story of Layla. Considering the fact that it’s fantasy, it’s fiction and not real, maybe a mix of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and series like Alias. Layla’s background remains a mystery for the reader and even for myself as a writer. All I feel and know is her background is not what we expect it to be. She isn’t in touch with both of her families and for some reason they don’t want to be in contact with her either. Not even when she was a little girl when she lost her parents and little brother. In my first book with the Dutch title Layla’s Glinstering: Eer en Geweten (Layla’s Sparkle: honor and conscience) she reveals small details about her family in Mexico.
How forts and families become one
Just like the Dutch family Vlorensteijn, Layla’s family is the head of a closed community in Mexico known as Fort Marquez (in Dutch the Basis Marquez). Just like Vlorensteijn it’s formed to safeguard their gifted community by the old ancestors in a time where spiritual gifts weren’t respected in society. Vlorensteijn and Marquez are formed as legal, financial and business empires. Marquez has also a political influence and even is involved in intelligence for several governmental groups around the world. Layla is aware that because of the success of Marquez in the 80s and 90s she wasn’t allowed to return to her family in Mexico.
The same applies for her mothers family in the Netherlands as her grandfather became a well known general in the Dutch army. When he was building his career, he refused to take care of his orphaned grandchild as any scandal could harm his owned titles in the army. Even as a young child Layla was aware of all the successes the families had despite her own grief and struggles. It made her determined to become greater than them all. She decided to work hard and become financially wealthy, no matter how hard she needed to work to get to this point.
A savior for the new era to come
When she’s in her twenties and has acquired an established position in the Vlorensteijn empire, it becomes clear how resourceful Layla Marquez has become and she’s a true asset for Vlorensteijn in the new era that has arrived. Not only because of the economic crisis that is heading around 2008, but also the shift in spiritual awakening that is starting. It seems like the gates have opened for communities like Vlorensteijn and Marquez to become aware of their true gifts and it’s time for them to change and develop to a new kind of empire. An empire of strength and resourcefulness, but also more social, psychological and spiritual awareness without losing touch of their business knowledge. Combining all these qualities can mean their survival for the next era to come and it’s Layla Marquez who can guide them through this transition.
We are talking about families who were spiritually gifted, intelligent and resourceful. With characters who were different than the mainstream, but decided to become like the ones who seemed to take control in society. As the ancestors refused to give in to the new creatures in power, he decided to train and control his family with strict rules and regulations combined with parties where they can be their true selves in a closed and protected community.
An indestructible shield called love
On the other hand, Layla remained her true self despite lacking the protection of a family and she endured many forms of abuse and neglect during her teenage years. She has witnessed what those in power can do to people who are nothing more than pure love and truthfulness. Nevertheless she never lost her belief in love, in the end that’s all she had. Despite the many tears and scars she carries, she is a true example of strength and resilience for empires like Vlorensteijn and Marquez who were lost in a capitalistic society for so many years.
