2019–06–05 Police Commission Meeting
League of Women Voters of San Francisco Observer Corps Report
Official League Observer name(s): J. Waggoner
Location: City Hall, Room 400
What meeting did you attend (name of the body, whether it was a regular or special meeting, etc)?
San Francisco Police Commission, regular.
Did you attend the whole meeting?
I arrived about 30 minutes late and stayed until they went into closed session around 8:15.
Tell us about public input: Did it happen? How was it conducted? Did it seem adequate?
Public input happened as planned in the agenda. Each speaker had 2 minutes. The ACLU clearly had coordinated having a number of attorneys provide a series of pointed comments about the delayed response to requests for data, and concerns that ongoing data releases require further requests. At one point, a commissioner suggested they stop and instead provide this feedback at a dedicated meeting later, which seemed disrespectful.
Tell us about the government: Who was there? Were they attentive? Were they prepared? Were they courteous with each other and the public?
All commissioners were there. The Police Chief and Executive Director for the Department of Police Accountability were there. Over 30 members of the public were there. There are more than half-a-dozen uniformed and plain clothes police officers there.
Want to tell us anything else (about the process used, the content of the meeting, decisions made, adherence to laws and regulations, etc)?
I live tweeted during the meeting here: https://twitter.com/jwaggo/status/1136437550803849216?s=21. I am particularly concerned about vacant administrative staff position. It is clear that operations/admin for the body is not going well: documents are not being distributed in advance to all the commissioners.
