2018–05–29 Mission Police Station Community Meeting
League of Women Voters of San Francisco Observer Corps Report
Observer name(s): J. Waggoner
Location: Mission Police Station
What meeting did you attend (name of the body, whether it was a regular or special meeting, etc)?
Mission, Regularly Scheduled Community Meeting
Did you attend the whole meeting?
Yes.
Tell us about public input: Did it happen? How was it conducted? Did it seem adequate?
There was no agenda printed or on the screen, but Officer Chris Canning went over it verbally as he started. He took a few questions and comments throughout but sometimes asked people to wait for the end. He tried to focus on issues raised by the public at the previous meeting, and to request public input on what issues to focus on for the next month. There were about 24 people there.
Tell us about the government: who was there? Were they attentive? Were they prepared? Were they courteous with each other and the public?
Captain Caltagirone wasn’t able to attend, so Chris Canning of the Investigations Unit led the meeting. There were a few other officers there who didn’t introduce themselves. The Department of Elections had two staff members there presenting about the election. The lack of an agenda, given that the Captain was called away, was understandable but unfortunate. The newsletter was handed out with a number of narrative reports, data charts, and maps.
Want to tell us anything else (about the process used, the content of the meeting, decisions made, adherence to laws and regulations, etc)?
The attendees, topics, and tone of the meeting did not seem to reflect the breadth of the District’s community. I personally would have felt uncomfortable expressing concerns or disagreement with other community members or the government representatives there.
