WATERCOLOUR LANDSCAPES OF TINT. ON APPLE ARCADE

Lykke Studios X Oliver Pyle

Are games a form of art? — Here, at Lykke Studios, we only answer “definitely, yes!” to this question.

Putting together all the expressive elements of tint. : gameplay, interactions and music , imagery and storytelling,- we only had in mind to create the most unique, beautiful and relaxing game about watercolour painting that would become a true collision of art and science.

Yet, the main focus for players is to solve watercolour puzzles applying the key principles of colour theory while enjoying intimate atmosphere of a garden art studio, every book of tint. reveals 4 chapters of a mesmerising story told through watercolour paintings of Oliver Pyle.

Oliver Pyle has established himself as a successful landscape artist, predominantly focusing on the United Kingdom which he considers to be a rich source of inspiration.

Oliver took advantage of an opportunity to become a professional artist following a solo exhibition of his work in 2012.

“Up to that point, art had just been a hobby” - Oliver says. “I spent a lot of time as a child drawing in a detailed and representational style. I then made the transition to painting in watercolour to capture the subject that I most wanted to paint — the landscape.”

Today Oliver’s work is sold through 6 galleries in the United Kingdom and online. The closest of his involvements is the Mulberry Tree Gallery in Dorset.

Our collaboration with Oliver has started with sharing concepts, thoughts and ideas reasoning the best ways of fitting fine watercolour art into the mobile game.

“It was something that I hadn’t done before and I enjoy being challenged by new ideas and opportunities.”- Oliver Pyle says.

We agreed that European landscape setting with a flavour of Provence in France or Tuscany in Italy suggested by Oliver would fit the game aesthetic perfectly. Consequently, 5 individual locations of tint. watercolour story were painted.

“Drawing on my own experience of these places and using reference images and conceptual sketches, we were able to create the ideal settings and colour palettes for tint.’s watercolour story chapters!”- Oliver shares.

The story characters images were created outside of the background painting to then be photoshopped into the original scenes. This required some careful planning to ensure consistency in the lighting and posture, relative to the background.

All the watercolour story art work for tint. was done in Oliver’s studio that is based at his home.

Here, at his cosy creative place, Oliver usually enjoys a cup of hot tea and listens to Beethoven, Wagner and Mahler. This simple rutual helps him to fully focus on the painting process and stops distracting his thoughts of day-to-day issues intruding.

“Creating the art for tint. has been a helpful challenge for me! I have always been able to paint well from imagination and reference images, enabling me to take on commissions that other artists may not be so comfortable with, and this project has enabled me to develop these skills further.”- Oliver added.

Meanwhile, on the other side on the world, in Thailand, Bangkok, Lykke Studios offices look watercolourfully awesome! :)
