The newest addition to the Lympo football roster — Robert Pires. The retired French footballer was a long-time Arsenal team member, having been voted by the fans as the 6th greatest player in the club’s history.

During his career as a professional player, Robert has secured a long list of achievements a footballer can get — he was a FIFA player, FWA Player of the Year, and he was even included in the FIFA 100 by Pelé.

Now, he’s joining the Lympo family to have his career and achievements immortalized in the blockchain.

The Career of Robert Pires

Robert’s love for football was always coursing through his veins. Being born to a Portuguese father and a Spanish mother, Pires was a fan of both Benfica and Real Madrid, even wearing both football shirts to reflect his divided loyalty. When Robert was a child, his dad was playing for a local team, and Pires would spend every Saturday watching his dad play — thus, his fiery passion for football was set. At the age of 15, he left school and began a two-year sports degree course in Reims.

After finishing the sports degree and graduating from FC Metz youth academy, Pires started off his senior career with the FC Metz senior roster. During his six seasons with the club, Robert won the Coupe de la Ligue. In 1998, he signed to play for Olympique de Marseille and stayed there for two years.

In 2000, Pires joined the Arsenal roster — the team he would spend most of his career at. By the second season, he fully got to grips with English football and had one of the best seasons with the club — he led Arsenal to win the league title, was at the top of the Premier League assist charts, and was voted both FWA Footballer of the Year and Arsenal’s player of the season.

During the 2003–04 season, he has become a pivotal part of Arsenal’s Premier League title win, which made Arsenal the first English top-flight club to remain unbeaten in 115 years. That year, Pires was Arsenal’s second top scorer. In 2006, after a 12-month extension to his contract has expired, it was time to move on. Robert Pires left his mark in Arsenal’s history, being voted as the club’s sixth greatest player of all time in 2008.

In 2006, Pires joined the Spanish team Villarreal for an initial two-year contract, where he helped the team finish second in La Liga — the best team’s league finish in history. After his extended contract had expired in 2010, Robert returned to England and trained at London Colney to keep his fitness levels up, where he was then invited to play for Aston Villa for six months.

In 2014, Robert was signed by FC Goa, one of eight teams in the newly created league, and was named the team captain. However, in February 2016, Pires announced his retirement from professional football.

Apart from his remarkable career in Arsenal, Pires has been a crucial member of the French National Team — he was part of France’s 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 wins, and also played in the 1996 Olympics, as well as Euro 2004. For his achievements, he was awarded the Golden Ball, for most outstanding football, and Golden Shoe, for most goals scored, at the 2001 Confederations Cup. During his international career, Pires was a two-time golden goal assistant — first, in the 1998 World Cup and later in the Euro 2000 final. His golden goal assists in 1998 were the first Golden Goal ever scored at a FIFA World Cup.

After his retirement, Robert Pires has expressed interest in mentoring talent and has often been seen training with Arsenal and since has also worked as an Arsenal club ambassador. Robert contributes regularly to French television and works as an ambassador for Puma and Star Sixes, the leading legends tournament alongside other commercial partners. Robert also currently enjoys training and sharing advice with Pena Deportiva Football Club in Ibiza.

During his career, Pires was well-known for his outstanding technical knowledge, great footwork, amazing field vision and finesse finishes. Fans call him one of the best wingers the Premier League has ever seen. Robert Pires has definitely left his mark on the history of football and for that, we want to celebrate him with his own collection of Lympo NFTs.
