The song begins with a weary traveler, representing an aspiring artist, drawn to the inviting lights of “Hotel California.” The hotel, with its “warm smell of colitas* rising up through the air,” symbolizes the allure and glamour of the music industry that entices countless hopefuls.
As the artist enters the industry, they’re greeted with a seemingly perfect world. The “pretty, pretty boys she calls friends” and the “mirrors on the ceiling, pink champagne on ice” are metaphors for the superficial friendships and extravagant lifestyle that come with fame and success.
