Imagine you are tired after a long working day and go to a restaurant hungry like a wolf and you take the menu and realize that the items you are about to order will increase your calorie intake. What would you do? Do you spend more time looking at the menu labeling and try to find items that would not affect your calorie intake or do you shrug sigh and go with your original order?

That’s an excellent point to consider if you are responsible for designing a menu, giving labeling and description is something that is being adopted by almost all the restaurants now. The idea behind this technique is that customers can make an informed decision as to what to eat and they can go for healthier options. Your menu labeling depends a lot on the kind of customers you are catering to, try and understand your customers better before including or removing the labelings from your menu.

Menu Layout

There are a lot of theories on how customers generally scan the menu and one is the opinion of Wansink who says “we generally scan the menu in a z-shaped fashion starting at the top-left hand corner.”

It may or may not work for you because having your popular item on the right top corner of the menu and your most expensive items in a box have worked wonders for many restaurants. These are the general things that can be done to improve the menu but there is no guarantee that this will be able to influence the customer in a manner you are intending to do.

No one but your customers can figure out the specifics of menu design for you. You can start with one of the general theories but including specific questions in a feedback form will do wonders for you.

It’s Authentic!

Having a perfect Mexican meal in India is still difficult and as a restaurant, if you can provide that you can make sure that you are termed as authentic Mexican restaurant by just giving more authentic names to your items on the menu.

In conclusion, the menu influences a customer’s food choice considering the restaurants can provide such a menu. Following general theories would be a great start in the right direction but would be specifically working for you is something you need to figure out on your own.

We believe asking specific questions results to specific answers which can be used to make a more informed decision on the menu front or even in any decision-making process.
