Real-World Testing Improves the Technical Hiring Funnel

You might be familiar with the technical hiring funnel that most companies use for interviewing their technical talent. Generally speaking, there are four stages:

Some companies use two stages, others use three — regardless, these stages can be mixed-and-matched depending on the individual needs of the company. We’ve designed the Lytmus platform to compliment all stages of the funnel so that your company finds the best talent, every time.

We’ve optimized our method so that you can hire faster and smarter. With the Lytmus platform, you’ll spend less time interviewing while maintaining the same hiring benchmark. Let’s touch on how Lytmus integrates into your existing recruitment funnel.

Pre-Screen

After receiving an application, your first move is to send the candidate a coding challenge. The average coding challenge will cover a number of computer science ideas. These challenges are designed to assess a candidate’s understanding of basic concepts. Unfortunately, the bulk of these challenges rely on puzzles and brainteasers, and the problem with that is they often offer no indication of real-world skills.

We take this stage a step further with our comprehensive assessment we call a Tryout. Unlike the common coding challenge, our Tryouts specifically evaluate an engineer’s capability to perform on the job. How? Instead of brainteasers and puzzles, Lytmus Tryouts require candidates to solve problems and complete tasks that they would actually encounter on a day-to-day basis. This provides the unique ability to see how a candidate will perform in the role ahead of time. And that gives you greater peace-of-mind when advancing candidates to the next stage.

Phone Screen

The goal of the Phone Screen stage is to observe how candidates perform with unforeseen challenges: Do they give up when faced with a roadblock? Can they think of a creative solution? Do they cover all their corner cases when implementing the solution?

We improve upon the typical phone screen with the Lytmus Live Interview. This tool allows interviewers and candidates to connect via a state-of-the-art virtual machine. Think of it as a “flight simulator” for evaluating engineers. It’s the most streamlined way to conduct a phone screen. The Live Interview platform operates from within your browser, requires zero set-up, and is fully customizable: Choose questions from our vast content library, or create your own. With the Lytmus Live Interview, you gain unparalleled insights into how the candidate thinks, how they collaborate, and how they solve complex problems.

Take Home

Need further validation? We also offer specialized Lytmus Take Home projects. Our Take Home projects are a more in-depth Tryout designed to gauge a candidate’s competency with more advanced, large-scale projects.

The best part? Lytmus Take Home projects come equipped with auto-generated reports and screen recordings. We save you valuable time with the most detailed analysis possible.

On Site

If the candidate has made it this far, you’re confident that he or she has met your company’s hiring requirements. Here you can delve even further into the Take Home project and start to understand the decisions and tradeoffs the candidate made. If you’ve previously conducted your interviews on whiteboards, you can now do it exclusively within the specially designed Lytmus live environment. Using our platform, both the engineer and candidate can pair-program within the platform, while a third party observes and takes notes. Lytmus makes setting up the on-site development environment painless. That way, your project-based on-sites are ready to go whenever you are.
