The “Monogrammed” Edition
Dear Readers,
I have a very simple etiquette question. What do you do with something you own that is monogrammed or has your full name on it, that you would like to give away, not throw away. From gently used monogrammed towels to a Goyard bag to monogrammed-cuffed shirts to luggage. What to do?
The Monogram case is easier. My friends Lisa Zimble, Lynn or Lara Zises, any relative of Mark Zuckerberg whose name begins with L, or any of these folks who happened upon the item in a Salvation Army would have a fantastic story. But full name? Noone that I know of, in the entire world, would be a match.
Side note: I hate throwing things away that are perfectly good, just not suitable anymore, for one reason or another.
Related note: I have one item that is a gift — brand new, out of the box, and expensive — that is engraved with my entire name that is just not my style and, my name is misspelled! Just one letter off, true. Side etiquette q: would you tell the gift giver? I don’t think so. But the whole thing is a) ridiculous and b) makes the give-away challenge all the more challenging.
Separate, but related, challenge: what about books that are inscribed to you by name? Rip the page out? Send it to The Strand and let some random person wonder about the auspices of the note?
You guessed it — while all of this is 100% true and I do want suggestions as to what to do with my stuff, it’s also a sad! attempt to talk about anything other than Russians and wire-taps and steaks with ketchup.
