Mental health care is crucial for moms of all ages. The problem is that the very nature of motherhood typically involves laying all of our own care aside to care for others. The distinction between “care” and “cares” here is intentional. We lay our own care aside, including medical care, mental health care, self-care…

This is especially true as a primary caregiver for a child who struggles with mental health. It is a never-ending cycle that quickly leads to burnout — and sometimes deeper issues.

The old saying, you cannot pour from an empty cup is applicable here. As moms, if we cannot manage our anxiety, make some peace with our past and present, find ways to work out our own issues and trauma, and find some joy in life, how can we help our kids? But we do, or we try, even in the midst of internal chaos.

Without proper mental health care, moms face, at best, symptoms of burnout and, at worst, a complete mental breakdown, rendering us incapable of helping our children, the very ones we most desperately want to help.

Mental health care for moms is critical.
