On Friday we travelled up to London from Brighton to take part in #Reframe16 hosted by Involve at King’s College London, to discuss how to facilitate conversations in this ‘Post-Brexit’ climate.

It’s been over a month since the results of the EU referendum on the 23rd June 2016, and it’s certainly been a turbulent few weeks since then. It seems almost a lifetime ago. We’ve seen a change of Prime Minister, dismissals, reshuffles, resignations, power shifts, and the entire spectrum of emotions rolled out over an entire nation.

Stories of family divisions are abundant, and the differences of opinion across the nation have become apparent.

It’s easy to point fingers, blame others and let our anger and disappointment get the better of us. However, people voted, and whatever the reason, there is no doubt there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

We went along in the capacity of visual practitioners to see how we can utilise our skills in what is likely to be a long and uncharted journey ahead for the nation.

The #Reframe16 event used Open Space Technology and knowledge sharing get conversations started. A lot of questions were formed during the day and the beginnings of rich dialogues were emerging. How can we work together to form a new vision of the future? How do people get their information? What does it mean to be European? How can the disengaged be engaged? How do we separate pride from nationalism?

With a topic so vast and important as this, the event was never going to be about solving the problem or answering all the questions. What is important now is to ask the right questions, and make sure the disenfranchised have a voice.

We hope to combine our visualisation and harvesting skills with facilitation techniques such as Open Space, World Café and similar practices in our own community to help people navigate their way through sensitive topics and conversation to find a common ground and move forward in whatever capacity that may emerge.
