Welcome to our STEM Student Spotlight series, where we highlight the incredible initiatives and achievements led by STEM students in Canada. Our mission is to empower and inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators by celebrating the achievements of student leaders. In today’s spotlight, we’re excited to showcase Bonan Luan! Bonan is a student from the University of Toronto, and he participated in our Work Integrated Learning opportunity.

Bonan has been exploring the potential of data processing and visualization with NumPy and Bokeh. Through this blog post, we delve into Bonan’s enlightening experience with these powerful tools and explore how they empower data-driven decisions, propelling him toward exciting career opportunities.

Bonan elucidated the process by which he acquired a wide array of skills and knowledge in NumPy and Bokeh through his involvement in diverse projects spanning his time with the Work Integrated Learning opportunity program.

“I learned about indexing and slicing multidimensional arrays. My project for the course was a game where you had to either predict the result of an indexing/slicing operation or provide an index/slice that would create a certain result from the given input.”

“In the course, I learned about row and column layouts, as well as interactive tools for charts. For my final project, I extended the previous project to feature all three newly-learned interactive features.”

Ultimately, Bonan reflected on how the skills he acquired contributed to both his personal development and professional advancement. He emphasized how engaging in data science coding equips young college students with the tools for success in data-driven professional environments.

“As an aspiring software developer studying computer science, having greater knowledge of data science and its tools is naturally helpful for my field. Beyond that, I was able to further practice my programming, documentation-reading, and problem-solving skills, all of which are relevant in programming-adjacent endeavors.”

“Data science is a rather popular field nowadays, so there are economic opportunities that could be opened up by learning more about the subject. Aside from that, being equipped with tools for analyzing data allows for such analyses to be performed whenever the appropriate situations arise.”

Through these powerful data processing and visualization tools, Bonan has unlocked the potential to make data-driven decisions that fuel innovation and drive meaningful change. Stay tuned for more inspiring stories from our STEM Student Spotlight series!
