Welcome to our STEM Student Spotlight series, where we highlight the incredible initiatives and achievements led by STEM students in Canada. Our mission is to empower and inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators by celebrating the achievements of student leaders. In today’s spotlight, we’re excited to showcase Christina Zhang! Christina is a UBC student who participated in our Work Integrated Learning opportunity.

In the program, she has dipped her toes into data science and machine learning. This blog post delves into Zhang’s challenges that reinforced her learning. This experience taught her how to empower data-driven decisions and propel her toward exciting career opportunities.

Christina in the beginning, had some struggles but later learned many effective tools

“I learned about other methods of creating arrays, how to stack arrays vertically and horizontally, and stack them with the given specifications”

“I learned the basic mathematical operations used in NumPy and how to use them.”

“I learned how to input data from multiple sources and use a cross-hair tool for data visualization.”

As Christina continued her journey with M2M tech, she finished her course on Supervised Learning. Justin took a moment to reflect on how her acquired skills had significantly contributed to her personal and professional development.

“As an aspiring UX designer, learning how to do research is really important. Learning how to code and bring data visualization to life will be essential when interpreting my findings. Moreover, these skills are also transferable in psychology (my major).”

Christina also further talks about how learning the course benefited her:

“This benefits me because I’m still exploring my passion for UX. Gaining skills that are related to the field will undoubtedly boost the quality of my work. It will also diversify my skillset so I can be a useful and contributing member to my group/company in the future.”

By harnessing the capabilities of robust data processing and visualization tools, along with the power of AI and machine learning, Christina has tapped into the capacity to make informed, data-driven decisions that ignite innovation and bring about impactful change.
