Welcome to our STEM Student Spotlight series, where we shed light on the incredible initiatives and achievements led by STEM students in Canada. Our mission is to empower and inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators by celebrating the achievements of student leaders. In today’s spotlight, we’re excited to showcase Ouail Slimani! Ouail is a student from UQAM who participated in our Work-Integrated Learning opportunity.

In the program, he has ventured into the world of data science. This blog post delves into Ouail’s challenges that fortified his learning. This experience taught him how to empower data-driven decisions and propel him toward exciting career opportunities.

In his first project, Ouail encountered challenges but later learned many practical tools.

“In this chapter, I got an introduction about the application that we will use in this course like Google Colab, Notebook, NumPy library and the different types of arrays.”

“We can also use the concept we learn to perform matrix calculations like addition, multiplication, and the reverse of the matrix using python script.”

He also learned to utilize Python and data science to make calculations with data to enhance his problem-solving skills.

“I learned in this chapter how to perform calculations based on data extracted from the columns. For example, I create a function using Python script [and] practiced some examples to create a function that converts the date from numeric format to string format.”

After completing this data sciences course, Ouail acquired fundamental skills that made him feel more comfortable in his current field of work.

“I work in the field of mathematical engineering and software engineering, and the content of this chapter gave me more techniques on how to represent mathematical functions graphically using Python script. I learned to use comprehensive lists and other functions like figure, circle, line, and how to display multiple plots in the same marker, styling them, and adding legends. This gives me ideas, for example, to create animations using mathematical functions for web applications, and it’s very useful for video game development too.”

As Ouail’s journey with the program concluded, he took a moment to reflect on how these courses benefited and helped young people like him.

“ I learned a lot of relevant techniques and methods in the field of mathematical and software engineering in this course. It allowed me to apply my technical knowledge in the field of mathematics and software engineering in real cases.”

By harnessing the capabilities of robust data processing and visualization tools, Ouail has tapped into the capacity to make informed, data-driven decisions that ignite innovation and bring about impactful change. Watch for additional inspiring stories in our STEM Student Spotlight series!
