I Think: Each and every woman should know the names and faces of offenders
Jyoti Magar, beautician, Pune
I rarely have time to look at the news because I work in the beauty parlour all day and then go home to my children. However, I listen to the radio and watch the news occasionally. I usually know of and focus on the news that everyone in my community is talking about.
Any news on sexual harassment thoroughly disturbs me. When I listen to something of this nature that happens to a woman, I feel furious. It leaves me wondering how anyone could do such a thing? Who has the right to do such a thing to another person?
I recall feeling scared and in danger after hearing the gory details of the Nirbhaya case. At first, I could not believe that men could commit such a crime. In fact, calling it a crime is too simplistic. This was unreal.
The victim should not remain silent about the terrible injustice that has been done with them. They should register a complaint with the police. The press should help them.
The press should talk about the accused rather than circulating photos of the victim. The victim’s privacy is important because once their name or photos are shown, society does not treat them well. It becomes a matter of embarrassment for them. Instead, photos and names of the accused should be circulated. Every woman on the street must know their faces. We need to be aware of how they look.
Women everywhere must join together to support the victim. The media should help give justice to the victims by publicly making the accused known, and all women should help the victim by speaking out against these vile men.
