I usually read Dainik Jagran and Prabhat Khabar or tune into All India Radio. Who has the time to watch television?

All rapes are wrong and must be reported. But because of the sheer number of cases and because they always happen to people we don’t know, it is hard to remember particulars of any case.

One case that stood out for me was when the local MLA was accused of misconduct. If elected representatives can do such things, then what can we expect of others?

The authorities are soft on crime. They have no appetite to punish the guilty. People know this full well. People have no fear of the law, and this emboldens them to commit all sorts of crimes, including rape.

If the media were to not highlight cases of rape, no rapist would ever be punished. Reading about rape, especially rape of minors, angers people. This anger forces the authorities to take action, as they want to stay in power. There is a clear link between rape being reported and the rapist being punished.

The rapist must be punished or he should be forced to marry the girl. Otherwise what is to become of her?

Even though there are sometimes discrepancies in reporting, I think the media is doing its job with sincerity. But the media can only do so much.
