AI Residency Programs
There are various Fortune 500 companies introducing the new “AI/ML residency programs”. These are full-time programs with durations ranging from a year to two, organized by the research department of the organizations focusing mainly on students from STEM/Statistical/bioinformatics or mostly any technical background. Having these programs as an experience will set you apart from the crowd and give you an enriching experience at learning like never before. You’ll be paired with or mentored by researchers and engineers and be allotted a project with guidance from them. There are exhaustive resources on the internet about how to get into them with various timelines. As of now, most of the applications for 2021 cohorts have been closed. Here is a list with the timelines for the 2022 cohort of some of the organizations and some regular. AND YES, YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE TO GET INTO THEM, open-source experience and proven research abilities are sufficient! Although a degree might help.
The Google AI Residency Program (formerly known as the Google Brain Residency Program) is a 18-month role designed to advance your career in machine learning research. Ideal candidates have a degree (BS, MS or PhD) or equivalent experience in a STEM field such as Math, Statistics, Physics, Biology, Economics, etc. Presently the AI residency program recruitment process is divided into following parts :
- CV Screening : Your CV should have detailed mentions of the projects you have worked on, open source contributions if any, and relevant publications.
- Online Interview on Hangouts Once you are shortlisted in CV screening, you are assigned a recruiter, and then invited for a 45 minute Hangouts coding interview. The Hangouts interview is primarily about Machine Learning and Coding. So brush up your coding skills — e.g. standard Data Structures, standard ML algorithms before appearing for this interview. Do keep in mind, it’s a very large domain to prepare for, so you can’t be completely prepared for it. Being quick and accurate in coding generally helps.
- Onsite Interviews Once you qualify the hangout rounds, you are invited to onsite interviews (to one of the select Google Offices). There, you have to give two research based interviews. These interviews are primarily based on your research interest and experience. Brush up on the projects you have mentioned in your CV (in details).
Deadlines: Usually December of previous year(2021 batch cancelled due to COVID)

Facebook AI
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Residency Program is a one-year research training position designed to give you hands-on experience with artificial intelligence research while working in Facebook AI. The program will pair you with an AI Researcher and Engineer who will both guide your project. With the team, you will pick a research problem of mutual interest and then devise new deep learning techniques to solve it..
The Residency experience is designed to kickstart a career in the field. This is full-time program that cannot be undertaken in conjunction with university study or a full-time job.
The process is extremely standard. Basically you’ll have the same set of interviews regardless of your focus. In other words, the interview process is exactly the same for front-end developers and ML engineers. As a result, spend enough time and effort on interview preparation. You may need to practice with a lot of coding questions, which might be irrelevant to ML and AI to some extent.
Dates: August
Deadline: January of the Same year
