Hoping to win a machine learning competition in 2022? Here’s what you need to know. I collaborated with ML Contests, using their database of over 80 competitions that took place in 2021 across Kaggle, DrivenData, AICrowd, Zindi, and 13 other platforms. Wherever the information was available, we categorized winners to figure out what made them win.

Platforms

We were able to gather 83 competitions across 16 platforms. The total prize pool available across all of these competitions was over $2.7m, with the biggest competition (Facebook AI Image Similarity Challenge: Matching Track) having a $200k prize pool hosted by Driven data.

Competition Types

The most common types of competitions were computer vision and Natural Language Processing(NLP). This is a significant change from 2020 when NLP competitions represented only 7.5% of competitions.
