Macmillan Cancer Support responds to launch of multi-million pound NHS recruitment campaign

Dr Karen Roberts, Chief Nursing Officer at Macmillan Cancer Support said:

“We welcome this campaign to recruit more nurses, which demonstrates the huge range of careers available in the NHS, including working in specialist cancer care. But getting new nurses into post won’t be enough without careful planning. It’s essential that we address geographical variations in nursing numbers and capacity if we’re to ensure everyone with cancer has access to the same level of support.

“Recent Macmillan research into the cancer nursing workforce found worrying trends that mean nursing provision can be a postcode lottery, which isn’t fair on patients or nurses alike.

“We are heartened that improving cancer care and outcomes are front and centre of the government’s plans for the future of the NHS, but it will be impossible to meet these ambitions unless we have both enough nurses and a proper plan for how we use their skills and experience to meet every patient’s needs.”
