Macmillan responds to the Financial Conduct Authority’s Discussion Paper on Duty of Care

Responding to the Financial Conduct Authority’s Discussion Paper on Duty of Care, Macmillan Cancer Support’s Chief Executive Lynda Thomas, says:
“It is a positive first step for the Financial Conduct Authority to review how it regulates the sector’s treatment of vulnerable customers — including thousands of cancer patients — to ensure that they get the support they need before they reach crisis point.
“But until it becomes obligatory for banks and building societies to have a duty of care to those most at risk — making it essential they are ready to offer the necessary tailored support — we will continue to see many people struggle with the severe financial consequences of their diagnosis.
“The financial impact of cancer can be crippling and Macmillan can’t keep plugging these growing gaps alone. It is unacceptable that support for those most in need of a safety net remains optional for the financial sector. This must change.”
