Your iPhone is only as great as the apps you have on it. Finding the App Store gems can be difficult, which is why I’ve compiled four great, free, iPhone apps for you to discover. Enjoy!

Apollo for Reddit

Free

Reddit is a fantastic platform of knowledge and opinion that I use on an almost daily basis. There are forums for everything, no matter how niche. Some of my favorite subreddits are r/financialindepencce, r/mildlyinteresting, and r/houseplants. Apollo is a Reddit client that works a lot better than the native Reddit app.

I’m going with a dark theme on my iPhone, so Apollo’s “Pure Black Dark Mode” fits perfectly.

Ever since I discovered Apollo (which, ironically, was recommended to me by someone on Reddit) I haven’t looked back. The UI is cleaner and more user friendly, and navigating the app is a lot easier. You can choose between different app icons and themes for the app, as well as other cosmetic settings and usability features. If you use Reddit, you’re going to want to download Apollo.

VSCO

Free

If you ever need to edit photos on your iPhone, VSCO is the app to use. With multiple great-looking filters and a super simple yet functional editing tool, VSCO is the only photo editing app you’ll need.

I used VSCO to edit the cover image of my article iOS 14 Widget Wishlist.

If you don’t feel like manually editing your photos, just use one of the filters built into the app. With a tap, your photos can go from boring to amazing. I’ve used VSCO to edit the cover images that I took myself for some of my Medium articles, such as this and this. If you’re looking to touch up your photos in a simple way, VSCO is the way to go.

Fantastical

Free

The native iOS Calendar app is bland and not very feature-rich. I found Fantastical a few years ago and have exclusively used it as my calendar app since. Fantastical not only looks better than the iCal app, but it’s got some features that’ll speed up your calendar workflows and make your life a little bit easier.

The right screenshot shows natural language input in action.

For example, Fantastical has support for “natural language input”, a feature that lets you enter a calendar item (and all its information) in one single line. By typing “Pick up dry cleaning at 5 pm” for instance, Fantastical automatically sets the title to “Pick up dry cleaning” and the time to 5 pm. This way, you won’t have to manually enter the information, but can instead treat Fantastical as an assistant that enters it for you.

Vellum

Free

I’ve always struggled to find great wallpapers. Most of the wallpaper apps in the App Store are downright terrible. I like having a completely black wallpaper on my home screen but something beautiful to greet me on my lock screen. Vellum is a super unique wallpaper app that regularly curates high-quality wallpapers by incredibly talented graphic designers and artists.

I hope you enjoyed this quick list of four great iPhone apps. If you found this article helpful, please give it a few 👏’s and comment with your own app recommendations!
