If you’ve ever used Google Chrome, you’re probably familiar with using extensions. Extensions can greatly improve the browsing experience by adding new features and speeding up the tasks you perform every day. One of the things Chrome does better than Safari is offering a vast library of different extensions.

Back in 2018, Apple changed the way extensions work with the release of Safari 12. This meant removing support for legacy extensions and exclusively supporting Safari App Extensions. This, combined with the fact that Apple charges developers $100 annually to have an extension on the App Store, makes the library of extensions in Safari look bleak compared to Chrome. Of course, there are benefits to be gained by being more restrictive, such as increased privacy and integrity.

This is not to say that there aren’t any good extensions in the App Store. Here are 5 great extensions that you can download today. Enjoy!

PiPifier

Free

The PiPifier extension is a tool that lets you watch any HTML5 video or movie in Picture-in-Picture mode (PiP). Instead of watching something in the Safari window, by pressing the PiPifier button, the video will instead start playing in an adjustable window above everything else on the screen. By holding ⌘ and dragging the window, you can place it anywhere on the screen, and if you simply drag it and let go, it’ll snap to the closest corner.

PiPifier one of the best tools for multitasking out there, and it has become one of the most important tools in my everyday workflow.

Grammarly

Free

The days of writing without spellcheck are over. If you’re a student, writer, or someone who wants to write professional-looking emails, you’re going to want to use Grammarly to do the grammatical fine-tuning for you.

Grammarly uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing to go through the text you write and find grammatical errors. Grammarly doesn’t only look at misspelled words, it also checks for style errors, word choice, and much more to make your writing look as good as possible.

The Grammarly extension works with most websites where you input text, but you can toggle it off whenever you don’t want to use it. It’s a fantastic extension that you need to use.

1Password

Requires 1Password for Mac

I’m a huge fan of the 1Password service. It’s a secure way to store your passwords and other sensitive information behind a master password. 1Password makes it easy to quickly generate new login credentials and easily paste a password to any site. I no longer use easy-to-remember passwords, and instead let 1Password generate them for me.

The 1Password Safari extension comes with the macOS 1Password app, so you’ll need a subscription to 1Password before you can start using it. If you are a user (or plan on becoming one), the extension is a fantastic tool to quickly access your sensitive information in Safari.

One of my favorite features is that it automatically saves a login (if you allow it to) whenever you create one at a website. This means I won’t have to manually input it into 1Password every time I create a login to a new service, which results in me saving a lot of time.

Accelerate for Safari

Free

One of my favorite YouTubers Ali Abdaal recently posted a video where he talks about the power of speed listening. It essentially means listening to content on faster than original speed, and can prove greatly beneficial if you learn the art of it. Speed listening allows you to take in more information in a shorter period of time, which will ultimately let you consume and learn more.

Accelerate for Safari is a great extension that adds a “speed up” button in your toolbar. In the extension settings, you can adjust at which speeds you want the button to toggle between. I’ve set mine to 2x and 1x so that I can quickly switch between them. You can even set key commands to toggle between different speeds. If you’re interested in getting into speed listening, Accelerate for Safari is the perfect extension for you.

Honey

Free

If you’ve listened to any podcast ever, you’ve most likely heard about Honey (and you’re most likely tired of hearing the same old ad read over and over again). The Honey extension automatically finds coupon codes to use on whichever website you’re visiting. If you’re like me and prefer shopping online due to the Covid-19 crisis, Honey is pretty great.

When you visit a website, a badge will shop up on the Honey button if there are any coupon codes available. Press the button and it’ll show you all the coupon codes. Honey will save you both time and money.
