Last month I wrote a story about why upgrading my almost 2-year-old Mac mini to the M4 model expected to launch in October doesn't make sense. So you might question why I upgraded to an Apple Watch Series 10 less than nine months after purchasing a Series 9 watch. The plan was to hold on to my Apple Watch Series 6 until now, making for a more beneficial upgrade but last fall I somehow managed to put a large scratch on my watch’s face. Combined with the uncertainty of how Apple’s blood oxygen sensor patent dispute with Masimo would play out and a $329 sale price on Amazon, I treated myself to the carbon neutral 41mm Series 9 with midnight aluminum case and midnight sport loop on Christmas Eve.

With my Series 9 watch still going strong, I shouldn’t be in the market for an upgrade so soon after purchase. But the sad truth is that I don’t particularly appreciate wearing a watch. For all of Apple Watch’s potential benefits, I only wear one for its health and fitness features. First and foremost, I integrated Apple Watch’s active calorie tracking into my X Factor calorie tracker app eight years ago. It’s enough of a reason to put up with the discomfort of wearing a watch but when rumors emerged that Series 10 would be thinner and lighter I knew I would be watching this year’s September Apple event with an eye towards…
