Not what we wanted… but is it what we need?

During the WWDC 2022 Keynote Apple introduced Stage Manager for iPadOS as new way for users to multitask and get things done. And, in typical Apple fashion, this ned feature managed to completely blow everyone’s expectations out of the water.

Including my own.

To put it bluntly. This isn’t the multitasking that we were looking for.

What we expected

We (the Apple community) have been expecting some sort of multitasking support on the iPad ever since Apple patent no. 11,320,869 surfaced on the web with the following illustration.

As I wrote earlier in macOS On iPad Pro? It’s Complicated, this illustration clearly shows a traditional macOS-style desktop complete with standard macOS-style windows and menu bar.

The patent noted that this macOS “mode” could be triggered by simply attaching a Magic Keyboard with Trackpad to the iPad. Do that and… voila! You have macOS-style apps running on an M1-based iPad Pro!
