Can We Really Call the Gold Apple Watch a $10,000 Failure?

I have a problem right now, and I’m sure it’s quite common: I have $10,000 to blow but nowhere to spend it. So I went to the Apple.com, and to my dismay, the gold Apple Watch Edition is no longer available.

In fact, Apple hasn’t sold the gold Apple Watch Edition since 2016. This version of the Watch came with a hefty $10,000 price tag, but it could be configured up to $17,000. When the Apple Watch Series 2 was announced, there were no new gold watches. At that point the “Edition” was a white ceramic watch starting at $1,249, an eighth of the gold Watch.

When the Apple Watch was first announced, the cheapest model was $349. If you used the cheapest Sport model and the $10,000 Edition, you’d know there was no difference in functionality. The price differential is entirely based on build. Of course, 18-karat gold is going to cost more than stainless steel or aluminum, but $10,000+ seems expensive even by Apple standards.

The gold Edition is gone, limited to a single year on the market. Some may view this as a rare Apple failure, but its place in Apple’s lineup wasn’t to become as popular as Fitbits.
