If you’re a smartphone owner, you probably also have a case to protect your $1,000+, primarily glass, investment. If not, you can skip this review and continue living on the edge!

The phone case market is seemingly over-saturated. If you search on Amazon, you’ll find thousands of cases from all kinds of companies ranging from familiar household names to more obscure companies.

For me, Evutec is one of those obscure companies I hadn’t heard much about before, but after having an opportunity to test their AER Series iPhone X/Xs Case, I’m paying closer attention from now on because they’re onto something.

At a glance:

  • Price: $39.99 (directly from Evutec’s website) or $19.79 (currently on Amazon)
  • Real wood veneer exterior
  • 1.6 mm slim profile
  • Wireless charging compatible
  • EVUSOF+: Proprietary material that allows for better shock absorption while maintaining color and structural integrity

  • AFIX+ Vent Mount

Initial Impressions

Right out of the box, the back of this case is made of REAL wood that is very smooth and looks beautiful. Despite how smooth it is, the edges of the case are made out of TPU that has grooves that allow for a solid grip on the phone. I particularly appreciate that although the case has two different materials, there is a very smooth and seamless transition from the wooden back to the TPU edges without it looking tacky or out-of-place. The interior back lining of the case is made out of soft felt material to avoid scratching the back of the phone. Overall, the case feels very light but sturdy.

Putting the case on the phone was very easy and the fit was perfect. As expected, the case doesn’t add very much weight or bulk to the phone which is great to see. Evutec also made this case compatible with iPhone X, so it’s nice that it fits either model.

A case with more to offer

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Evutec AER Series Case come with a car vent mount which Evutec calls the AFIX+ Magnetic Car Vent Mount. At this price point, I would typically only expect to receive a phone case, so the added magnetic car vent mount was a nice touch on Evutec’s part. What’s more, is that this isn’t just a cheapo mount; it feels very solid and sturdy. It is also rubberized to prevent it from scratching that beautiful wooden back of the case.

Evutec AFIX+ Car Vent Mount

Like a typical car vent mount, you just clip this into one of the vents in your car and it’s ready to go. Evutec also designed the clip so it can be attached to the mount in two different positions depending on whether you want to attach your phone vertically or horizontally. In practice, I found that the case attaches regardless.

While magnetically mounted, the phone feels firmly secured even when hitting bumps in the road while driving.

What about wireless charging?

All this talk about magnetic mounts might have you wondering where this case leaves you when it comes to wireless charging. It would be quite annoying to remove your case every time you need to wirelessly charge your phone. Fortunately, Evutec came up with a creative solution to allow you to have a case that attaches magnetically, while still enabling you to charge wirelessly.

Most cases that attach to magnetic mounts have a metal plate or disc inserted inside the case. This design covers the charging coil within the phone which prevents it from being charged wirelessly. In these cases, you either have to charge your phone with a cable or remove the case in order to charge it wirelessly.

Evutec AER Series iPhone X/Xs Case Charging Wirelessly

Rather than putting a metal plate or disc into the case, Evutec uses 4 metal inserts that make direct contact with the magnetic mount, while remaining out of the way of the phone’s charging coil so it can freely wireless charge. This is an excellent solution to a basic problem that i’ve seen many leading mobile accessible brands leave unresolved. Great job, Evutec!

Considerations

There’s very little to criticize about the Evutec AER Series iPhone X/Xs Case. The only thing I would take into consideration, in general, when you’re shopping for phone case is how much protection you want the case to provide your phone. Evutec mentions that this case offers military-grade drop protection which it defines as being made to “withstand a 4ft drop.”

My guess is that this case will be great for the average user and will likely protect your phone from everyday bumps and light drops, which is what you would expect from a bumper-style case such as this one. However, if you tend to abuse your phone then you might want to get a case with more coverage to offer a higher degree of protection.

Although this review is specifically about the Burmese Wood version of the AER Series case, Evutec designs cases that are made out of a variety of materials including aramid fiber, ballistic nylon, leather, and wood. Currently, most of their offerings are for iPhones, although I spoke with an employee of the company who said they’re working on expanding their offerings to Android devices.

The Bottom Line

The Evutec AER Series iPhone X/Xs Case is excellent. From the quality build to the thoughtful and aesthetically pleasing design, Evutec leaves very little to be desired. To top it all off, they throw in a magnetic car mount to meet form with function. At this price point, this case is a great value and i’d highly recommend it.
