Forget the M3 Chip! Apple’s Ready for M4.

Apple’s release cycle has gone from strange to weird. But why?

The Apple silicon family grew by one with the launch of the M4 powered iPad Pro — Apple’s first iPad Pro release since 2022.

Already Apple has released an M4 powered device despite the fact that the M3 family of chips was announced less than seven months ago, in October of 2023.

I’ve been personally hoping to see a new Mac mini with an M3 chip launch soon, but the release of the M4 makes me think Apple has moved on to bigger things, leaving the M3 family in the dust just as quickly as it left the M2 family behind.

Has Apple’s release cycle changed?

From M2 to M3 and now M4

In June of 2022, Apple unveiled the M2 chip. It wasn’t until January of 2023 that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros were updated with the new M2 silicon. But then, to the surprise of many, those models were quickly outmoded by the release of the M3 family in October of 2023. Less than a year later.

And now, in May of 2024, we have the M4 chip.

But what about all the Macs that have yet to be updated with the M3 chip? Has Apple forgotten about them? Or will they be skipping the M3 family altogether, going…
