Good Riddance to the Apple Car

It always seemed like a dumbass idea

The word from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is that the long-rumored Apple Car is officially dead after nearly a decade of twisting, halting, rocky development. Personally, I think the Apple Car’s demise could not have come soon enough.

Sure, it’s been fun trying to imagine what a car made by Apple might look like, as well as what sorts of strange and clever innovations it might’ve had. Apple is renowned for its ability to swoop into and upend product categories with superior build quality, design, high-end materials, and unique solutions for problems many accepted as “just the way things are”. It would have been fascinating to see Apple’s take on things like door handles, windshield wipers, cup holders, the dashboard, etc. A car is a veritable wonderland of design challenges and choices, from the drivetrain to the chassis to all the interior details, and it’s tantalizing to imagine an Apple-y take on all of these, especially since so many of Apple’s design team and executives are avowed car enthusiasts.

However, none of these are reasons why Apple could have and should have tried to make a whole damn car. I’d also be curious to see Apple’s take on a toaster, an ironing board, a jet ski, a pen — really almost anything. And Apple should make none of those items.
