Goodbye To The iPhone Plus. Will Anyone Miss it?
It was always a bit of a forgotten middle child…
I didn’t realise it had gone until my podcast co-host, Rob, told me during a recording of Not PC. But he was right — the iPhone Plus was no more.
We were both perplexed by this. Perhaps we’d got it wrong — maybe it simply wasn’t mentioned during the iPhone 17 keynote, but was still an option during the configuration process.
We both checked.
Nope. It was officially dead.
Apple isn’t averse to cutting ties with products. It’s not quite as callous as Google is when it comes to killing its darlings, but the iPod is possibly the most visceral example of an Apple product which served its time and — possibly — left us too early.
Oh, and let’s not forget the iPhone mini series.
And then there was AirPower, which didn’t even make it to the shelves despite a snazzy on-stage introduction.
The big question is: where does the iPhone Plus sit within this legacy of ultimately doomed Apple products? On the surface, it’s the least interesting culling (I’ve never had the desire to review one, for instance), but I think its demise actually tells a far more interesting story.
