How to Get Push Notifications for Gmail on iPhone

It’s beyond me why in 2021, iOS (and MacOS) still can’t receive instant push notifications for new email from Gmail accounts.

iCloud-based email accounts instantly push new mail to your devices, but if you’re one of the bazillion people who also use Gmail, you’re still forced to rely on Apple Mail “fetching” new mail every 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

While this may not matter for some people, for others it’s an inconvenience to not be instantly notified whenever there’s a new mail message. This limitation is one of the main reasons people choose to use a different email app rather than relying on the stock Apple Mail app.

I’ve discovered a workaround for this issue which isn’t difficult to implement. It just takes a little configuration upfront. First, a quick general explanation and then we’ll get into specifics.

Concept overview

Every iPhone user has an iCloud-based email account (i.e. yourname@icloud.com) which receives instant push notifications for new messages. Gmail allows users to forward email to another email account. Apple Mail allows users to reply to an email from a different email…
