Being sent a PDF that “you must sign” is one of those dumb pieces of modern-day bureaucracy that we just have to deal with. However, if you own a Mac, it’s a job you can do in five-seconds flat — and you don’t need any expensive software to do it. macOS has a very neat facility built in that allows you to sign documents, either by scribbling on your trackpad or by taking a photo of your signature. Here’s how to do it.

Open the PDF in the macOS Preview app. If you have no other PDF-handling software installed (such as Adobe Acrobat), this will likely happen by default when you click on the file. If it doesn’t, right-click on the PDF file and select Open With, then choose Preview.

Scroll down in the document until you reach the place that needs your signature and then click Tools > Annotate > Signature >Manage Signatures.

If you’ve got a nice big MacBook trackpad and you’re confident you can swipe your signature on it (it’s easier than you might think), then pick the option to sign on the trackpad. When you’ve daubed your signature on it, press a key on the keyboard to let the Mac know you’ve finished.
