How to Redact PDF on Mac

Lately, I have been on a PDF editing journey on my Mac. I had to go through dozens of PDF documents, and I needed a good PDF editor to read and catalog them. Thankfully, the built-in Preview app app offers many tools that let you annotate, sign, and redact PDF documents. You still need a full-fledged PDF editor if you want to make changes to the acutal document, but for reading and annotations, the Preview app works just fine.

How to Redact a PDF Document using Preview App

  • Double-click on the PDF document and open it in the Preview app.
  • Click on the annotation tool.
  • Click on the Redact tool and drag the cursor over the text you want to redact.

Remember that once you redact a PDF and save it, you won’t be able to undo the steps. So only save the PDF if you are sure that you won’t need the redacted information. Better yet, create a copy of the PDF file before using the redact tool, just to be on the safe side.
