iMac: Now With M1 Inside
“One More Step Forward”
Apple introduced their all-powerful and redesigned iMac featuring M1 silicon in its first Spring Loaded 2021 event. With this new redesign, iMac is finally joining the Apple M1 lineup. Along with M1, the new iMac features a 4.5K Retina display, studio-quality mics, and many more.
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing said “M1 is a gigantic leap forward for the Mac, and today we’re excited to introduce the all-new iMac, the first Mac designed around the breakthrough M1 chip.”
Apple’s latest and greatest iMac boasts a boatload of features and upgrades over the previous generation of Intel-based iMac which was discontinued recently. The new iMac also marks another step forward for Apple in its transition to Apple Silicon.
Let’s take a look at some of the new features Apple announced for its latest and greatest iMac.
Apple went all out in the design department of the new iMac. The redesign is aided by M1 silicon. Because M1 is a System on chip, Apple was able to fit into a body that is 50% less than the previous generation of iMac. The boxy design that is reigning all Apple products recently is also making its appearance here too. The new iMac is only 11.5 millimeters thin and weighs less than 10 pounds making it one of the thinnest and lightest desktop computers.
Apart from that, the Mac is now more colorful than ever. The new iMac comes in a spectrum of seven vibrant colors — green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver It also comes with a new power connector that attaches magnetically and a woven 2-meter-long color-matched cable. The redesign of the iMac makes it much more compact and vibrant that can fit into almost any place. All in all, the redesign is a bit on the plainer side, it’s not as revolutionary as Apple claims it to be.
The new iMac features an incredible 24-inch 4.5K Retina display with more than 11 million pixels, 500 nits of brightness, and over a billion colors. The front of the iMac now also less obtrusive borders than before but still white borders for some reason. The huge bezel is still present at the bottom which houses the important components. Apple could’ve easily made an iMac with much narrower bezels all around but still, they didn’t. The new display a P3 wide color gamut and True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the color temperature as the environment changes for a more natural viewing experience.
We’ve already seen how M1 performs in the wild. The first leg of M1 Macs which include MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini are one of the best Mac machines you could buy. Now with M1 inside the new iMac, the same goes for it too. The M1 inside it features a powerful 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU featuring one of the fastest integrated graphics. Along with it, M1 has a 16-core Apple Neural Engine with unified memory architecture.
The new iMac can provide up to 85 percent faster CPU performance, up to 2x faster GPU performance, and up to 50 percent faster than the most powerful discrete graphics. These performance enhancements make iMac work more efficiently and run graphic and performance-intensive programs like PhotoShop, Final Cut Pro, and Xcode with a breeze. You can run iOS/iPad apps and can allow you to play Apple arcade games if you are into that sort of thing.
The new iMac features a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, Apple says it is the best camera they have ever put in a Mac. Which could deliver high-quality video and great performance even in low light. The new camera takes advantage of the M1 chip and the Neural Engine, which enhances the image quality with better noise reduction, greater dynamic range, and improved auto exposure and white balance.
Along with it, the iMac also features a studio-quality three-microphone array and a six-speaker sound system. The studio-quality mics can ignore the background noise and focus on a user’s voice. The six-speaker sound system has two pairs of force-canceling woofers placed side by side that can produce a massive sound stage with strong, articulate bass and crystal-clear mids and highs.
Keyboard & Mouse
Apple also unveiled the new line of iMac accessories like Magic keyboard with Touch ID, Magic Mouse, Magic trackpad. The Touch ID on the Magic keyboard uses a dedicated security component on the keyboard that communicates directly with Secure Enclave in M1. The Magic keyboard comes in three variants, the regular Keyboard without Touch ID, one with Touch ID, and another one with Touch ID and the Numeric pad.
The new iMac features four USB-C ports, including two Thunderbolt ports for superfast data transfer, and support for up to a 6K display. like Apple Pro Display XDR. There’s also support for WiFi 6 and a 1Gbps Ethernet port in the power adapter.
Pricing and Availability
The new iMac is available to order from April 30, on apple.com and will begin shipping in the second half of May. The new iMac is divided into two variants, a 7-Core GPU variant, and an 8-Core GPU variant. The 7-Core GPU variant is priced at $1,299 which comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. In the box, it also has Magic Keyboard without Touch ID and Magic Mouse.
The 8-Core GPU variant starts at $1,499 for 256GB SSD and $1,699 for 512GB SSD. In the box, it has a Magic keyboard with Touch ID, Magic Mouse, and Ethernet. The 8-Core GPU variant comes in all 7 colors whereas the 7-Core variant is only available in green, pink, blue, and silver.
With the new redesign and the inclusion of the M1 chip inside, Apple took everything people loved about the old iMacs and one-upped in every department. Sure it does look plain and all, at least it’s a welcome change. macOS Big Sur combined with an M1 chip, the iMac will surely feel fast, smooth, and intuitive.
The transition away from Intel Macs surely is working like a charm for Apple. With generational increases in CPU and GPU performance and Apple’s tight integration among its Apple products, the latest and greatest iMac is the desktop computer to beat. Now it’s only a matter of time, Apple announces a 27-inch iMac with a much more modern-looking design and probably with an M1X chip inside.
