We received a call from a client who stated that they wanted to purchase an iPad for their spouse but was unsure of which model to choose from and wanted help deciphering the choices. If you are looking for specifics, you can visit https://www.apple.com/ipad/compare, but if you’re looking for a simplified list I have done my best to simplify the differences.

The current iPad models included in this comparison are the 11” & 12” iPad Pros, the iPad Air, the iPad, and the iPad mini devices. All prices listed in this review are current as of 12/09/19.

There are two big decisions before you start to decide. The first question is how much storage space you need and the second is what your connection requirements are.

Storage Requirements

There are many factors to consider when it comes to storage.

Do you save data on your device or in the cloud?

Do you take a lot of photos and/or video?

Do you use many apps?

Do you stream media or save it to your device?

If you use cloud services to store your files, stream your media, don’t take many photos or videos, and don’t use many apps you could get away with the 32GB or 64GB options.

If you use your device for taking many photos and videos or use a lot of apps, consider the 128GB or 256GB options.

The 512GB and 1TB options available with the iPad Pro models are for creative and design professionals who require a lot of storage for large video projects and detailed digital illustrations with many objects and layers, or DJ’s who storage a lot of music. For instance, a 512GB device will hold over 125,000 good quality photos or songs.

Connection Requirements

The primary consideration for connection requirements is do you need to use your device from anywhere or only at locations where there is wireless Internet access such as from home, the office, a hotel, a motel, or a Holiday Inn. If you need to use the device when driving down the road, or out on the middle of a field, you will want to the Wi-Fi + Cellular option.

(Security note — you should never use public Wi-Fi, consider using your mobile phone as a hot spot to connect you iPad to the Internet)
