While Apple has launched the iPhone models with new features and pricing, upgrading, and deciding which one to buy is still a cumbersome task.

Under the new iPhone 12 series, Apple has launched four new iPhones namely iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max which has feature differences.

In this story, I will break down those differences so you can determine which iPhone model suits you the best. Here we start:

Design Differences-Steel vs Aluminum

Like last year, Apple has not completely revamped the iPhone 12 models but it did add the flat edges and rounded corners of the iPhone 4 and 5 to make it more stylish.

The iPhone 12 Pro models feature stainless steel which is quite a fingerprint magnet versus the aluminum used in the mainstream iPhone 12. Despite the strong stainless steel, I actually prefer the 12’s lower-end aluminum for its lighter weight

Camera Differences- Telephoto or no Telephoto

Here we have the biggest changes

Both the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro have the same ultrawide and wide cameras but the Pro models also have a telephoto camera which helps in taking better close shots.

The Pro also features the new lidar sensor, which utilizes a laser to capture information in depth This will be helpful when you need a crisp photo in Night Portrait Mode.

Overall, If you’re more about smartphone vlogging and photography, iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max is a decent deal.

I also want to mention that the front camera is the same on all four models but there are differences in aperture and zoom range in the back camera of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. Pro has an aperture of f/2.0 while the Pro Max aperture is f/2.2 which means Pro max can capture more light into the sensor. Pro has a digital zoom up to 10x and an optical zoom of 4x while Pro Max features 12x digital zoom and 5x optical zoom.

When it comes to camera differences another thing which stands out in the keynote is Apple ProRAW, which provides the benefits of editing the photo in RAW format. Users can make use of advanced photo editing controls such as white balance and color while capturing videos in high dynamic range.

Display Differences-No high refresh rates

Here iPhone 12 and 12 mini takes the biggest bump from the iPhone 11 720p LCD to Apple’s Super Retina XDR Full HD+ OLED displays. OLED’s are known for their deep blacks and contrast. The brightness of OLED displays in all iPhone 12 models is up to 1200 nits, which 50 percent more compared to the older iPhone 11.

Display in iPhone 12 is also narrowed down to a smaller size. iPhone 12 mini comes in 5.4-inch while the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 pro comes in 6.1-inch varieties, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is bigger and is available in 6.7-inch options.

Pro models also support a ceramic shield that provides better drop protection.

RAM differences-Pro means better multitasking

As per the sources and rumors, RAM in iPhone 12 models has also taken a bump. Standard iPhone 12 and mini comes with 4GB of RAM while the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro max get 6GB of RAM which is an increase over the 4GB in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro.

Storage and Color differences-Vibrant colors vs Polished finish

Storage options are same as iPhone 11 lineup 64/128GB/256GB for the iPhone 12 and /128256GB/512GB for the iPhone 12 Pro. Although The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini come in a variety of vibrant colors such as blue, green, red(also known as project red), white and black while, the iPhone 12 Pro series comes in stealthier steel finishes such as silver, graphite(black), new pacific blue and gold.

Price Differences

iPhone 12 costs the same as iPhone 11 with $699 for the 64GB model, but that’s the 5.4-inch mini model, which implies the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 12 costs $100 more than the iPhone 11 for the new OLED display and little more things. Pro models on the other hands cost the same as iPhone 11 pro lineup, $999 for Pro and $1,099 for Pro Max for 128GB Variants
