iPhone 13 Rumors and Thoughts; Part 2
Looking at some more information with the upcoming iPhone 13, it’s safe to say that iPhone 13 is going to be a very popular phone come launch time later this year.
I’ve already mentioned a few of the rumors that I’ve seen so far this year when it comes to the 2021 iPhone lineup, however, there’s always room for more information to come to light. If you’re interested, see what I wrote in my previous iPhone 13 write-up below!
iPhone 13 Rumors and Thoughts (So Far)
More thoughts and Impressions on the Upcoming iPhone 13
I have a few more rumors to discuss with you guys, so without further ado, let’s get to some more rumors!
By the way, this is likely not the only iPhone rumor leak roundup left before the launch later this year. We have approximately 5 months to go before the expected launch date of late December, so it’s only a matter of time before the leaks turn into a deluge.
Alright, let’s get to the rumors.
iPhone 13 Display — Smaller Notch? Finally!
I’ve mentioned some thoughts on the iPhone 13 having an updated display, with the same sizes as the iPhone 12 lineup.
We’ve got more information about the lineup for iPhone 13 having smaller notches than past iPhones. MacRumors shares a fresh look at the potential display for iPhone 13 with their recent leak.
From the displays, it looks like the notch might be a bit shorter than the previous models starting with iPhone X in 2017. It also looks like the speaker will be moved to the top bezel as per the rumors from MacRumors as well.
Considering the dewdrop, punch hole, and in-display technology found in most Android devices, one would suppose that the smaller notch of the iPhone 13 is quite a welcome advance in the right direction for Apple fans.
Speaking of Punch Hole Displays. . .
Kuo also states that we could see a punch-hole display for some 2022 iPhone models. We could also see a move to in-display tech in 2023, getting rid of the need for any kind of notch, or punch hole for displays for iPhones.
I can assume the models with updated displays would be a Pro feature versus a base model feature, but who’s to say.
As exciting as a completely screened iPhone would be, we will have to wait for another 2 to 3 years before the dream that Ming-Chi Kuo has stated for us becomes a reality.
iPhone 13 Camera — Diagonal Camera Lenses, Quad Lenses, Lenses that Hit you with Lasers?
I’m going to take a stab at this here and state that we won’t see much of a change when it comes to the iPhone 13 lineup, but that’s not to say that there aren’t a silly amount of rumors coming down the line.
The renders that were obtained by MySmartPrice give us a glimpse into what iPhone 13 will grace us with.
MySmartPrice does not have all too mighty of a leak-filled track record so consider this your reminder to take these rumors with a monumental helping of salt, but it’s a rumor, so I’m here to talk about it. All rumors have a particular amount of truth to them, even if you have to dig a little deeper to get to the truth. Right? The smaller notch seems more likely, but the diagonal camera seems fishy to me.
The website shows us renders that look fairly similar to the iPhone 12 lineup, with a diagonal-like double camera setup for iPhone 13 base model. That would differ from the vertical double camera set up from the previous few iPhone models.
Now again, I would take this with a monumental grain of salt. A diagonal camera setup seems a touch odd for the iPhone.
My SmartPrice also states that LiDAR will stick with the iPhone 13 Pro Models as well. Expected, with the Pro model being the model reserved for the highest-end technology.
About that Quad Camera Setup. . .
Even though I’m confident that you’ve seen multiple rumors about iPhone 13 having a quad camera, I’m also confident that we’re not that far ahead of the game to see that major change when it comes to cameras.
The quad-camera rumor was fairly prominent in 2020. This was more of a wish I noticed than an actual solid rumor, but it was still all over the internet as of the first quarter of 2021.
Also, take note, the Galaxy S21 base model has 3 rear cameras. The Galaxy S21 Ultra (seen below) has more. Considering the typical ratio of cameras for Android devices versus iPhone devices, it doesn’t seem likely for iPhone to have more than 3 rear cameras. Also, the Quad Camera setup just seems so weird with this particular design.
I suppose we can only hope for something as amazing as a quad-camera setup, without being too disappointed in the quad-camera setup not happening. Let’s move on.
iPhone 13 Camera Specifics:
Rumored Specs for the iPhone 13 camera deal with updated camera lenses, portrait mode video capture, and the ability to shoot night sky-type photos. See the information below from MacWorld UK:
These new camera features include an ultra-wide-angle camera equipped with optical image stabilization and autofocus, which should be beneficial for close-up photography; Sensor-shift OIS across the whole range for better image stabilization; and various software features including night-sky photography and Portrait Mode video.
We’re likely to see an upgraded Ultra-Wide-Angle lens, with an f/1.8 aperture for the Pro Models. The upgraded Ultra-Wide-Angle lens will help with letting more light through, which will result in sharper images taken.
Rumors also lead us to believe that you will now be able to take portrait mode video, which we all know will up your TikTok game just in time for whatever insane end to 2021 that we all know is coming. 2021 has been a bit of a mess, hasn’t it?
Will we see a Camera Lens that hits you with a laser?
No, but, the more important question is, why would you want a camera that hits you with a laser?
What would you do with a camera that can hit you or your arch-nemesis with a laser?
Yes, infrared is one thing, LiDAR is another, but you know you were thinking about the death ray type laser that you can fry your enemies with because you know you were thinking about that. Alright, let’s move on again.
iPhone 13 Charging — No More Ports, Redux
In my last post about iPhone 13, I mentioned the possibility of a port-less iPhone 13 model coming to light in 2021.
I’m leaning against this idea as it may be too early for such a drastic change to the next iPhone. We know that MagSafe will continue forward from iPhone 12 over to iPhone 13 models.
Possibly we could see a charging port closer to the MagSafe charging port on MacBooks back in the day? We can rule out USB-C for charging, however.
We can expect iPhone 13 to be only an iterative upgrade to the iPhone 12 series in terms of charging features. We’ll likely see iPhones stick with lightning ports for the foreseeable future because lightning was made for iPhones, wasn’t it?
Well, we’ll probably stick with lightning until MagSafe is quality enough to have as a standalone for charging.
Likely with an upgraded MagSafe charging mechanism over any other improvements. However, you should take extra care with sticking your MagSafe Enhanced iPhone in your chest pocket if you have a pacemaker.

The iPhone 13 reportedly won't embrace USB-C - and it gets worse

iPhone 13 Battery — Larger? Smaller? Iterative?
Considering most iPhone S year models tend to have small battery improvements, iPhone 13 will also have battery improvements, albeit a physical one. Interesting to see that we’ll see a larger battery. Says Kuo;
The new 2H21 iPhone models feature a larger battery capacity than the iPhone 12 series, thanks to the space-saving design of many components. Hence, the new 2H21 iPhone models are also slightly heavier than the iPhone 12. The space-saving design includes integrating the SIM card slot with the mainboard, reducing the front optical modules’ thickness, etc.
So iPhone 13 having a larger battery would be interesting to have. Previous iPhone models have always relied on software to optimize battery, it would be great to have a physical battery improvement. Perhaps.
iPhone 13 Touch ID — Don’t bet on it, or maybe?
Alright well, the Touch ID returning to iPhone 13 debate is running strong. See Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s opinion on Touch ID for iPhone 13;
“We believe that the iPhone will significantly improve the user experience if it adopts the power button with the Touch ID sensor. However, currently, there is no visibility on the timing of adopting this new specification,”
It would be lovely to see Touch ID return to iPhones. I’ve held onto my increasingly old iPhone 7 Plus simply because of Touch ID. Considering I have to wear a mask consistently for my day job, Face ID tends to be problematic for me. So Touch ID is beneficial for me, but I digress.
While initial rumors have Touch ID being a more likely feature in 2022 iPhones, recent rumors have the possibility of Touch ID coming to this year's model. While some folks would be more than ready for Touch ID to be in-display, the technology is now rumored to be in the power/sleep/wake button on the side of the device.
Information gathered by 9to5Mac from various analysts amongst the web has the Touch ID enhanced power button becoming a possible reality with iPhone 13. See more information on the rumor below.
Is Apple going to add under-display Touch ID on iPhone 13? - 9to5Mac
Rumors suggest that Apple will likely add under-display Touch ID on iPhone 13. At the same time, with the Apple Watch…
In Conclusion. . . For Now;
Clearly, iPhone 13 will be an iterative update to last year's iPhone 12. Even though most of the upgrades will be internal versus external, those upgrades, in particular, could be what the doctor ordered for customers hanging on to older devices like myself.
Or maybe we’ll just continue to wait for the 2022 iPhones. Because we all know that we’ll be ready for the 2022 model when the 2021 model launches, right?
Stay tuned for more information, more rumors, and everything in between. I’m going to keep having fun, I hope you will too!
Even though iPhone 13 will likely be an iterative upgrade to iPhone 12, with changes being more internal versus external, people will be excited to see what the newest phone to launch from Apple Park in Cupertino would be.
Of course, everyone will probably pick up the iPhone 13 as well. Of course.
Stay tuned for more updates coming down the line.
