I have two M4 Mac minis at my disposal — the brilliantly-priced £599/$599 base model and a specced-up M4 Pro edition.

It’s the latter I want to focus on today — mainly because it arrived first. But also because I want to see what you get from a computer that costs a not inconsiderable £2,899 when configured to the spec I chose.

Having reviewed the huge array of comments left against my first impressions YouTube video last week, I’ve concluded that the following areas matter the most to people who are thinking about buying an M4 Mac mini:

  • performance testing;
  • comparisons with previous models; and
  • thermals and noise levels.

A quick note: I’m not your classic benchmarking reviewer. I find the entire process boring, tedious, and unbelievably complicated. There are just so many variables to account for, and it’s impossible to satisfy everyone.

So, I’ve kept things simple and focused on Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, and Logic Pro as my test apps, iStat Menus for monitoring, and my iPhone stopwatch for timing everything.

The results have been, predictably, fascinating.
