It’s indeed not (only) about tech
It’s (surprisingly) more about those circles!
I had bought my Watch 5 just a few days before reading “You should get an Apple Watch.” And I was extremely surprised that very soon after I could have confirmed the Activity circle addiction presented there as it was already building into me as well (besides mentioning that the tech has absolutely blown me away* from the first minute of use), but I’ve decided to wait for a month or so until I post back, just in case.
* Music and Apple Pay on one’s wrist are simply incredible themselves.
Now the “honeymoon” is officially over in my case too, however, so… let’s go:
I am/was not a sports-oriented person at all (I would/have rather call myself a sedentary guy before), but now I can’t leave any day pass without finishing my 30 minutes workout, without standing up and moving a bit for at least one minute each hour 12 or more times a day (I’m working as a programmer, so I sit down most of the time), and I’ve even increased my red circle’s length from the initial default of 380 to 570 Cal.
Sure, for the “sporties” anything less than 1,000 is surely not much, and as a matter of fact, I only need to walk ~2–2.5 km every day besides the normal flow to get it done, i.e. 2 laps around the lake or some similarly light workout at home, but for me it is something extraordinary to have achieved.
And now after almost 4 weeks, stereotypical as it may sound, I have no plans to ever stop and it feels great and kind of unbelievable to have finally become a bit more active myself!
I’ve recently also conducted a small research on Twitter and many other Watch owners apparently feel the same.
Update (Jun 29, 2020): A few months later, I’m still in. I have missed completion of the blue circle for 2 or 3 days in total, scoring 10 or 11 of 12, but green and red ones still add up units to my longest move streak every day! (And I’ve changed my favorite watch face a couple of times in the meantime, too.)
