Say hello to your new favorite daily word game
Wordle is an extremely popular, borderline addictive game. I haven’t missed a daily Wordle since I started playing four years ago. Most days, I follow it up with Quordle and several Octordles. But it’s not perfect. Many players start the game with the same word every day. Often the solution is one of a small set of words that take multiple guesses to reach. Take today’s Wordle¹ which I just completed. I started with SLATE as I always do and then chose POUND. I was in great shape after two guesses. I had S, U, and N in the correct spots and there was at least one T.
At that point, I came up with STUNT, SHUNT, STUNK, and STUNG. The answer had fallen out after two guesses but if the solution was STUNG and I played STUNT, then STUNK, it would take five guesses to solve. Normally I would burn a guess to winnow the possible solutions using a word containing H, G, and K, but I wasn’t feeling it today. So I blindly guessed STUNT, then SHUNT, solving the game in four guesses. It was slightly disappointing to take four guesses but good scores in Wordle are mostly about luck with a slight element of strategy to prevent losing games. The real Wordle challenge isn’t a low score, it’s quickly coming up with a complete list of possible solutions once multiple letters have been revealed.
