MacBook Air vs Copilot+ PCs
It’s a brand new day
In my recent story The Platinum Age of CPUs is Upon Us I mentioned that I planned to purchase the Acer Swift 14 AI laptop as soon as it becomes available. While waiting for Acer to start taking pre-orders I’ve been doing some research in advance of placing an order.
I started writing PC software for MS-DOS 3.x¹ in the 1980s and migrated to Microsoft Windows in the 1990s. But I haven’t purchased a Windows computer since switching to macOS in the 2000s². So my first question was do I want Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro. According to Microsoft’s Compare Windows page, the only difference is BitLocker drive encryption. That doesn’t sound like something I need, so Windows 11 Home it is.
While I was on that page I noticed that Microsoft offered to help “Find your next PC”. After clicking the link, I set the filter to “Copilot+ PC experiences” and was presented with a table containing 20 entries for the Microsoft Surface Laptop and 14 entries for the Microsoft Surface Pro. That left 7 entries for OEM partners. That’s the Microsoft I remember.
Of the 7 remaining entries, there were 2 for Dell, 2 for Samsung, and a single entry each for HP, Lenovo, and Acer. All entries in the table are available for pre-order except for the Acer I’ve been…
