Is your phone getting old? Have you considered selling it on the used market? We all love getting a new phone, but why not make some money off of your old one as well!

If you’re looking to sell your old phone, you may be worried that you’re not getting the best price you deserve. So here are some quick tips which will help you get the most value out of selling your old phone.

  1. Keep it Clean: Do you want to buy a dirty, nasty cell phone? Do you want a phone that makes you think it’s been through a bag of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos? Well, neither does anyone else. Keep your phone in a good clean condition, make it look as new as possible. Don’t just clean the screen. Take it out of the case, give the back and sides a clean too. Clean the case if its a part of the deal. Remove any stickers you’ve attached. Make it presentable for the buyer.
  2. Include accessories (if you have them): Wait a minute… hold on.. have you seen a charger anywhere? If it’s an option, typically your buyer will want to have the charger included in the deal. If they don’t see the charger (or any other accessories), they may expect a price cut. Include the box and instruction papers too, The more “fresh out the box” look you give, the more you’ll be able to charge (hehe get it charge?).
  3. Don’t sell too late: Just like a car, your phone’s value goes down over time. A 2 year old iPhone X can still sell for approximately 45% of its original value. While a nearly 2 year old Samsung Galaxy S9 will sell for approximately 35% of its original value. Roughly speaking, that’s a $700 drop (from $1529) for the iPhone X and a $560 drop (from $960) for the Samsung S9 over 2 years! Naturally, the sooner you sell your phone, the more money you’ll be able to get for it. Typically, Android phones do lose their value faster, while iPhones tend to hold their value a bit better over time.
  4. Get it unlocked: What does unlocking a phone mean? It means it can run on any carrier. Most buyers want to keep their network options open. If your phone can’t run on their network, then the great deal you’re offering could be a non-starter. It will take a little extra work, but it’s worth it. If you have a phone that’s older than 2018 in Canada, you will have to unlock the phone yourself. Don’t limit your market, you can learn more about how to unlock a phone in Canada here.
  5. Wipe your data: Your device is a source of personal information, one that could make you vulnerable to identity theft, so make sure to wipe it! Your data is worth-money! Money someone out there is willing to pay for and trust me, it’s not for the right reasons. Wipe your device clean, make sure all your photos, files, contact, etc. have been transferred to another phone or computer. Each phone has its own process to wipe data, so make sure you look it up. Plus, this will help the buyer get a fresh feel for the phone.

Follow these tips to get the best price for your old phone. A little extra work and attention will mean more money in your pocket.
