As you might have read in the title, someone using an AirTag tracked me. You might wonder why this happened, or what I did to provoke it. The truth? Nothing.

A few days ago, in early January 2025, I was at a lounge bar with a friend. When I opened my wallet to pay for my drinks and food, I found a white piece, which turned out to be an AirTag.

I don’t own one, so I activated my cellular data to verify it, and my phone detected it immediately.

An AirTag is a small tracking device you attach to your keys to locate them easily. It’s convenient — you can follow a direction on your iPhone to find them and even make them ring if they’re lost in the couch cushions.

I remember this has saved my best friend a lot of time and hassle. He has also used AirTags in his wallet, backpack, and suitcase. In China, he discovered his luggage was on the wrong continent, and the AirTag quickly showed him its location(in Dubai). However, there are limits to its tracking capabilities.
